Michigan Football Tease with Spring Scrimmage

Every April, in the cold, not-yet-spring Michigan Stadium, football fans get a tantalizing taste, a tease if you will, of what could be expected out of their beloved Wolverines in the fall football season.

My impression of the spring scrimmage, not that it really is a scrimmage at all, its a pretty ho-hum affair (at least photographically). The players are trying not to get hurt, so nobody puts out much effort during the plays, and the coaches don’t want to show anything, so the whole affair just ends up being a bunch of football players dressed up to feel good in their fresh unis and look pretty for the fans and our cameras… which pretty much was what happened again this year:

Mini-Me crashed the practice and Mario Manningham, left, and his receivign corps mugged for the paparazzi.

Sucks for Kevin Grady, left, who busted up his ACL and will probably miss the whole season.

Mike Hart was as bored as me watching from the sidelines…

Hit the Ref!

Hit the Ref!

So I had to get a picture of this as I was shooting a high school wresting tournament for the Free Press last Saturday in South Lyon. The kid, from Milford, has the job of slapping the ref with a yellow nerf stick to alert him that time is up in each round. Seems like there totally could’ve been a more efficient and less silly system of time keeping. This is why wresting is so funny to watch and photograph.
