How NBC and NHL screwed up 2009 Stanley Cup Postgame

Malkin lifting the Stanley Cup, being surrounded by TV and Getty photographers

Most of our shots of the postgame ice stuff, like Malkin lifting the Stanley Cup, were ruined by TV and Getty photographers

This and the subsequent clip i’ll upload is only interesting to show photographers the shit we have to deal with in getting photos from the post-game celebration. With the exception of a couple special “pool” photogs, (Getty, NHL, AP, Reuters) all others were held back until basically the initial spontaneous celebration had been well underway on the ice. Then we’re held to this side carpet forbidden from going near the players until after the trophy presentation… Notice all the TV and shit getting in our shots. My favorite douche was the NBC camera guy on skates(!!) circling every player doing low-angle wide shots.

So i forgot i had my G10 around my neck and was only able to get this little sample of the post-game chaos. This is after the trophy was already presented to Crosby and the team photo. NHL finally let us get close to them and it was basically a free-for-all scrum. Lots of elbows and knocked heads.

2009 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 Pregame Show

This pre-game show from Joe Louis Arena and song has been ingrained in my head now after covering the whole playoffs. Detroit put up a good show, alas to no positive result…

Video: Detroit Red Wings Locker Room (Teaser)

Here’s a brief teaser to a glimpse of the Detroit Red Wings locker room, seen after they took a 2-0 lead in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals against the Pittsburg Penguins, in the bowels of Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich.

Check back for more clips as I go through the extra stuff from Game 2.

I love LIVEVIEW: or How to shoot xmas lawn ornaments in knee-deep snow

A camera on the end of an extended monopod gets great low-angle shots

So, last night my assignment was to take photos of the xmas lights at this house being featured in a Detroit newspaper (can’t say which one cuz it hasn’t gone to press yet…) for story on people who go nuts decorating for the holidays…

My problems: It was really really cold, 18 degrees F, it was in the boonies, the yard was still buried in a foot of snow, and did I say it was really COLD!!??

So my solution: Threw my Canon 40D on the end of my monopod, threw on my 15mm fisheye lens, attached the wired remote cable, and for the first time since I bought this camera I put the LiveView feature to good use. With the live preview on the LCD, I was able to easily compose my shots of the stupid lawn ornaments and snap some shots with the camera extended on the end of my monopod without getting myself into the snow.

That penguin thing above was 6 inches off the snow, where I basically stuck the camera extended on the end of my monopod in front of it……where otherwise I would’ve had to lay down in the snow, get wet, get dirty, and freeze my nose off.

Thank you Canon, LiveView rules.

Funpics from the Big Ten Tourney

So Rod went paparazzi on me putting up two remote cameras before the championship game of this year’s Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. They actually do a good job of showing my process.

Basically, the cameras are prepped first in the media work room. Then I clamp them to the basketball hoop arm, and another under the tables of press row. The hardest part of it all is figuring out where to focus the lens.

The last couple of shots show the end result of my two mounts. One from the basket angle, and the other, wide, from below press row.
