Tutorial: Sports Photography 101 - Session 1

I’m beginning a new tutorial series today on the basics of sports photography, presented in respect to coverage I’ve done in Michigan. I’ll be presenting the subsequent lecture sessions to students at the Michigan Daily too, so hopefully these will get some good mileage.

Comments, questions and suggestions are welcomed as always!

First time shooting bowling

There’s always a time for firsts, and this past weekend was my first time to shoot bowling, at the Michigan High School State Bowling Championships:

The event was held at Airport Lanes in Jackson, Mich.

I couldn’t use flash for most of the competition, and had to keep very far away, so my 300mm lens was essential.

This young man won the whole thing in the end.

The girls competed at the same time.

Some kids had very interesting form.

Frustration with performance.

The excitement of a hard-fought strike.

Even emo boys bowl?!

The helplessness of a bad throw.

By the time of the final rounds, all eyes were on a few.
